Prepare yourself for a weekend of Mid-Century Americana, when escapism was on the corner of any major city in America – at the local Tiki bar. The Tiki resurgence is here to stay and with an event like The Hukilau™, you’re instantly transported into a past golden age that many of us never had the chance to experience…until now! Think Mad Men, only throw in a flower lei and an authentic Mai-Tai…
What is a Hukilau? A Hukilau [hoo kee lau’] is a method of fishing in ancient villages of Hawaii. Villagers would cast a large net into the sea, herding the fish, then slowly pulled it to shore. The feast that followed was meant to emphasize the spirit of family and community, or ‘ohana. Our mainland Hukilau is a metaphorical net thrown out to the entire world, bringing the lovers of “Polynesian Pop” or “Tiki”culture together for our own special celebration.
The Hukilau, known as the most authentic Tiki event in the world (and the 2nd largest Tiki event in the world), began in 2002 in Atlanta, GA honoring a historic Trader Vic’s location in the downtown Hilton. In 2003 the event changed location and has grown from a small gathering into an international event, drawing up to 1,500 visitors annually for a 4 day weekend in beautiful Ft. Lauderdale, Florida – home of the World Famous Mai-Kai (est. 1956). The Hukilau will celebrate our 15th Anniversary and the Mai-Kai’s 60th Anniversary in 2016.
Our many activities include Hip Swaying Hula Lessons, Craft Cocktail Presentations, Mermaids swimming at the famous Wreck Bar, educational symposiums on Vintage Roadside Attractions & Tiki History/Architecture and voyages through the intracoastal waterways of sunny Fort Lauderdale. Expect to witness live tiki carvings, traditional Polynesian and fire knife dances, revivalist burlesque and transportive music.
And of course, we spend as much time as possible at the most well preserved Mid-Century Tiki temple on the planet, the iconic Mai-Kai Restaurant and Molokai Bar.
Our Villagers fly in from all over the globe and from within the U.S. for this tropical weekend where the Rum flows like Lava. The Hukilau is also a top destination for award winning bartenders, Tiki artists and authors, musicians of surf/lounge/exotica/spy, historians and preservationists of Mid-Century America. We celebrate friendship, good Rum and exotic cuisine. We imbibe on creations like the Mai Tai, Black Magic, Shark Bite and the Rum Barrel.
Grab a lei and come escape into a world of palm trees, warm breezes, and create your own paradise. Join hundreds of Villagers as we share Aloha spirit and create memories and friendships that last a lifetime.
The Hukilau would like to thank each and every performer, speaker, mermaid, aquatic performer and Villager that has attended since our humble beginning. Without all of you making the trip to celebrate with us we wouldn’t be here. YOU are Aloha spirit to us and we are proud to continue throwing that net to reach more enthusiasts, urban archeologists and Tikiphiles across the globe.
