At the first Hukilau, Johnny McGowan wowed the audience with his band Johnny Knox and Hi-Test. His cocktail swilling, Latin-lounge alter ego, Grinder Nova made his Huki-debut for our 10th anniversary in 2011 and now he and his 8-piece band are back.
Grinder Nova swaggers and sways across the stage with a blazing array of gonzo-guitar verbosity from his vast arsenal. It’s a cocktail of even parts Surf, Tijuana Brass, and James Bond performed with all the live intensity and
melodrama of a Ballywood musical. Regulars at Trader Vic’s in Atlanta, as well as Drive-invasion, Clermont Lounge, and various other well established dens of ill repute, Grinder Nova and his Pit-stop Mariachi Band have perhaps best been summed up as “a sleazy, skeezy, South-of-the-Border rock and roll inferno, complete with horns, maracas and sinful dispositions.”-Chad Radford, Creative Loafing
