A Hukilau [hoo kee lau'] is a traditional Hawaiian festival held in the fishing villages of old. A large net is cast into the sea to herd fish then the villagers slowly pull the net to the shore. The feast that follows is meant to emphasize the spirit of family and community, or ‘ohana. Our mainland Hukilau is a metaphorical net thrown out to the entire world, bringing lovers of “Polynesian Pop” or “Tiki”culture together for our own special celebration.
The Hukilau™ began in 2002, and has grown from a small gathering into an international event, drawing close to 1,200 visitors from all over the globe to our special weekend Tiki village in Ft. Lauderdale. Based at the historic Yankee Clipper (now Sheraton Beach Hotel), and culminating at THE Tiki Mecca, The Mai-Kai, The Hukilau™ is a special weekend that our guests return to year after year. The Hukilau™ has braved hurricanes, brought in legendary performers, symposiums, art shows, demonstrations, craftsmen, vendors, and mixologists, each year being better than the last (which is hard for our guests to imagine!).
The Hukilau™ is more than an event. It is an experience, a gathering, a celebration. For four days each summer, we treat our guests to an experience they will never forget. We celebrate friendship, music, and good rum. We reminisce about a past golden age that many of us never experienced. We dance, we shop, we sport our best Aloha wear. We forge new friendships that last a lifetime. We drink lots of rum, share drink recipes and watch mermaids swim in the Wreck Bar. We marvel at the beauty of The Mai-Kai. We escape into our own tropical paradise.
